Thanks again for the comments. I do couple of things to achieve the depth. I always put a dark color as a base, either black, brown. Depending on the effect, I start adding colors and I sponge ( make sure some of the paint is off the sponge not to get a blob in your start area) on colors with a soft touch not to get the paint into the darken carved areas. The sailboat was black base with a metallic bronze ink dye on top. I found out that the metallic acrylic works just as good or better as the ink dye. I also like the copper, and others like this. Try that and let me know.

Sure Tammy,

Which particular gourd photo do you like? I use two to four colors of acrylic paints and sometimes I even put ink dyes on top. If you would like to talk by phone, I can call you or you me?  I am not very good at painting scenes or things so to give things a color, I paint layers to bring out the depth. Thanks for liking my technique.
