I'm pretty new to gourd art, and pretty basic too, lol! I started painting gourd birdhouses a year or so ago, and am thoroughly enjoying it. Most of my designs are very basic, "cartoonish" designs, but I'm hoping to branch out into so pyrography and more "exotic" gourd art as time for practice allows.

Sue...I think your gourds are wonderful. don't sell yourself short. Yours were some of the gourds I looked that prompted me to join. I like your use of vibrant colors and the designs. I'm new to the art too so I appreciate others' work so much.

Sue, The best  concensus going around is not to copy anyones anything, but to do what you do best, use the work of others only as inspiration so you can create something that is all your own. You'll feel much better about your own work if it's all your own, too. There are lots of items in the Forum about copyright if you want to see more on the subject.

If cartoon style is your style, capitalize on it! Your standards are shared by many of us!

When I see such fine detailing like this I wonder at how you gourd artists are such drawing artists too! Everything I've made so far has been "cartoon" style, big and chunky, because my drawing skills are pretty rubbish to say the least. I've thought about tracing an image and transferring it to a gourd, but that feels a bit like "cheating" - or am I just being too "strict" with myself because I'm new to this and setting myself standards that are too high? What's the general consensus about that Bonnie?

Welcome, Susan. We’re glad you’re here. There are many activities and discussions in which you may want to participate. Look around and join in. Add some photos of your own, but please no more than 25. And have fun! The GAE rules are located on the right side of the main page. Darlene
