In all the years I've been working with gourds, this has never happened. Some of the gourds that had been cut and cleaned and lying around my studio started developing small specks of a bright green…Continue

Serena, I've been wondering how to become someone's "friend."  Painless.  Thanks for your comment on the puppy.  I got bored with doing leaves and I guess I 'lost it' for a while.  Only been doing gourds for a couple of years.  Woodcarver for a couple before that.  Artist for many years before that.  bp

Thank you Serena....I love how you burn the gourds to look natural & beautiful. I've had a gourd that has a crackle texture to it & I've talked to it for 2 yrs now. Asking it what it wants to be.....& after I've seen your work,  I finally know what it needs to be.   Thanks for your inspiration!!!  Angie

Can't wait to see what you do. I believe you'll be inspired with all of the choices and I'm sure they will reflect well in your work. Glad I could pass on the info.

Hi Serena, thanks for the nice comments.  I've been doing the santas for several years, but just started the other work this year.  So I'm learning.  Your work is so inspiring to me because it lets the gourd be a gourd - you know?  So organic.  I'm wanting to move in that direction, but my own style hasn't emerged yet.  I saw where you had decided to begin working with patinas.  I'm about on the edge of my seat waiting for the first ones.  :-)   Your tops.  Later!

Hi Serena,
Yes, my husband drove me.  I have poor vision in my left eye so was not comfortable going that far alone.  We had a good meeting and established a state chapter constitution as required by AGS and collected first membership dues.  Then we had a pot luck lunch, and a member did a presentation on making vases.  She provided the vials and several members made them.  We all shared tips and techniques.  There were some uncleaned dried gourds for sale.  The next meeting will be a little closer -- Syracuse.  It will be October 22.  The big news last week was that the  NYSGS now has a website (through AGS) at

http://AmericanGourdSociety.org/NewYork

We also now have a Yahoo Group at
I hope you'll become a member of NYSGS and also the Yahoo Group and maybe put up an album of your work.  It would be great to hear from you now and then, and do consider coming along in October.    I hope to make a single day of that trip (leave early, come back late) instead of staying over as we did at Ithaca.  Be well, keep in touch.
Carol

Did you ever make it out to Ithaca?

Serena, I used a couple of products from Sculpt Nouveau. Their Product B, is a base coat for non-metal surfaces (paint with metal in it) it comes in copper, bronze, iron, brass and a few others, while it's wet you add different patinas. Google Sculpt Nouveau, they have lots of information on line, they are really great folks. Their Tradititonal Tiffany Green Patina is a great choice. Look for patina's that are not for hot metals.....those are for the Blacksmith's.
