It's like a dye for the inside of the gourd, but I believe they leave it in there for a long time. Will have to do a search to see if I can find that link again.

Well, the coffee is used for coloring the inside of the gourd, and gives it a nice effect on the outer side as well. I saw it on one of my searches of Hawaiian gourds, not sure where.

Hi Renee, that's going to be my next project. Want to try growing my own gourds as well. Many of the hawaiian gourd artists actually use green gourds and carve out the background and then fill up with coffee on the inside. The effect is quite unique and beautiful.
