Hey ya'll........I just need to sound off a bit. I began learning gourding last oct 2011. Mostly I do bird houses and have used leather dyes and " the gourd dye" , acrylic paint and inks. Only the acrylic paint is trustworthy. Everything else is JUNK!!!  I've sold more than fifty bird house gourds that took on average about six hours each to produce. Now I'm starting to refund money and / or redo the comebacks because the colors are fading and in fact completely disappearing!!! They said they…See More

Hello everyone. I am a brand new member and brand new gourder? I am wondering about leather dyes versus ink dyes. I like the leather dyes but the colors don't seem to be consistent. For example A purple turned lime green metallic when dry. The honey turned almost yellow when dry even tho I am using a good sealer before applying the color. I wonder if ink dyes are better?   Thanks Paul

Kathleen is an old, glorious name I did not appreciate until I was grown.

Yes, I plan to be careless, open, wide awake in addition to being cold, tired and hungry. Every book I read about the Trail has me anxious for the arrival of March!

I only have a few gourd eggs left that I am finishing up (I've had some orders for customized eggs with names) and am finishing a few pieces of furniture. After the Trail, of course I will be making art again but I don't know what kind. I'll find my way back to GAE to see what's going on so please stay in touch.

Hello Paul

Where the heck Phillip came from I don't know. So sorry!

I'm going down to Georgia and begin at the beginning-Springer Mountain. I have a freind in Atlanta who is willing to let me visit for a day or two and then drive me to the trailhead-well, the parking lot. The actual trailhead is a 7 mile hike from there. It apparently weeds out a lot of hikers right then. But, will gets you through everything and I'm determined to do this. It's a lifelong dream and challenge. Next September, I'll be back to making art but who knows what else?

Thanks for the encouragement and anyone is welcome to go! Even for a few days.

Hi Phillip

I am going to be moving soon, for a few weeks, to Charlotte, NC, to finish a project before I go on my trip. I'm leaving mid-March to hike the Appalachian Trail. !!!

It's been a dream most of my life and I've decided that..if not now, when?

Anyway, I'm arfraid I don't know many gourders here but I'll be happy to do some local scouting. One of the shops I work with-Fiddlestix, in Mars Hill, also shows some gourders and she'll be happy to give me info. Also, the gallery I use in West Jefferson, RT Morgan, has some gourder contacts. My photographer, Eli Warren, in Greenville, SC, also knows some gourders.

I'm on the road most of today but I'll check back and please, stay in touch!

Oh, how far is your place from Laurinburg, NC?

Saw that you said you would buy some ink dyes at Michael"s and some at Welburn, so you should just try the Michael's and see how you like them.  I use Adirondack's that I buy from Michael's or JoAnn's Fabrics.  Take a look at the one that is on a stand with feathers and 3 little bowls....they were all done with Adirondack ink dyes.

Paul, Lena's add was in the first gourd book I ever bought, and that was about 20 books ago.  I was living in Sacramento, Ca. at the time when I bought the best gourd book ever and that is what got me hooked on gourds.  The name of that book is The Complete Book of Gourd Craft by Ginger Sumit and Jim Widess and you could do yourself a favor by buying it.

Hi Paul, sorry to hear about your brother, I know it is a big loss.  As to your discussion on Adirondack dyes with Karen today, you can go to utube and put in Adirondack dyes and it will show you how they can be used.  If that doesn't work put in Ranger Co., they are the makers.  You could also goodle either of those and they show how to use.

Paul, leather dyes don't have the lightfastness of ink dyes. But any artwork should be kept from direct sun or bright lighting for long periods of time. As for the purple, when you spray on an acrylic sealer over it, you will lose the iridescent coloring.  Some people would love to keep it.  :-)  I really prefer the ink dyes. IMHO
