Thanks for the comment on my Lotus Garden gourd....you asked about it it was colored pencil....the flowers, leaves and other items in the center are Prismacolor pencils...the yellow/green is watercolor paint. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks again... Tony
Laggenaria said… Hi, Nancy. Today I was managing my photos on GAE, and realized that I didn't answer your question about seasoning and finishing a mate gourd... I beg you apologize me... Well, in southern brazilian states, people has 2 methods to season a mate gourd: by using hot coals, or by using mate itself. I prefer second one. Before using gourd at the first time, you have to pour yerba mate powder until a half gourd and complete with boiling water. Throw it all away (after cooling), and you can make your mate. The flavor will get better as you prepare your mate more often.
As for the external finish, you can not use varnish or any product that waterproof the gourd. I just apply wax and polish. Good luck!
