"I have made an ocean drum which is really cool. The ocean is metal "shot" inside the gourd. The gourd has a drum head so you can play it as a drum or rock it back and forth and it sounds like an ocean"

My first attempt at a doll. Banana gourd body, jewelry gourd head. Hair is hanging moss with feathers and bead embellishments. Design is burned then painted and antiqued with shoe polish.

Hi Nancy!

Thanks for the comment on my Lotus Garden gourd....you asked about it it was colored pencil....the flowers, leaves and other items in the center are Prismacolor pencils...the yellow/green is watercolor paint. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks again...   Tony

Hi, Nancy. Today I was managing my photos on GAE, and realized that I didn't answer your question about seasoning and finishing a mate gourd... I beg you apologize me... Well, in southern brazilian states, people has 2 methods to season a mate gourd: by using hot coals, or by using mate itself. I prefer second one. Before using gourd at the first time, you have to pour yerba mate powder until a half gourd and complete with boiling water. Throw it all away (after cooling), and you can make your mate. The flavor will get better as you prepare your mate more often.

As for the external finish, you can not use varnish or any product that waterproof the gourd. I just apply wax and polish. Good luck!

Thanks for your comment on my metal pot! Saw that no one had sent you a gift note yet! I do really like your work. The patinas would probably work very different in your wetter part of the woods.

The lichen I used was fairly tough and pliable. I was lucky and found a bunch of it at an RV park in Palestine, TX. I used E6000 to attach it.
