I'm just starting my first 3D carving. When you finish the carving, what bit do u use to smooth out the little grooves caused by the carving bits? Example: in flower petals that r too tiny for sand…Continue

"Terry, I love ur innovative artistry. It's so original. I also love ur standing canteen gourd. Will u share how u get the canteen gourd to stand on it's base without sanding the bottom? I love the look!!"

"If you are sanding with diamond burs, you can put them into a pin vise to make them easier to hold and manipulate.  I have some on my tools page on the Arizona Gourds website.  Those are also handy for drilling holes when there is no power…"

"Perfect!  Thank you for sharing your information.  I will set to work to try them today!  It makes sense to do the detail manually, reducing accidental slips.  Your gourd is beautiful.  I look forward to seeing more. …"

"Thank you Barbara. The way I carved the thin petals took quite a bit of time and patience as dose all carving. After I did the shaping, experimenting with many different bits, I used diamond bits to smooth. Thank you Phyllis Sickles for suggesting…"

"Wow, Judy, this is beautiful.  Our KC Gourd Patch members looked at it at our meeting and are inspired to learn high relief carving.  I wonder how you carved the petals so thin without them breaking."

"Thank you Mary! Yes, I did get this gourd from Welburn. I order all my gourds from there but this is the first really thick one I've gotten. I was afraid I would ruin it but decided, no venture, no gain."

"Judy, I use a lacquer sanding sealer on my carvings before I apply any kind of paint or other finish.  Just a light spray coating will do.  It keeps the grain from raising and protects the surface."

"Nice!  One must have to purchas Wilburn gourds for projects with such carvings.  I have never purchased one before.  I know that the gourds I use grown here in Ohio are no where thick enough to carve deep. "

"Judy came to my house for a private lesson and brought this piece and a couple more to show me.  This piece was awesome!!  She really did a super job with this piece.  Like so many photos, they don't do the art justice.  "

Lady, you must text a lot on your phone.  You message had text writing.  I loved that!  ;o)

Would love to have you come for a lesson.  Like I said, my private lesson prices are very reasonable and my students keep coming back for more classes.  We end up being good friends.  Please contact me before you come because I may have some event or another private lesson.  Also, I will need to find out what you would like to learn.  My students get printed information that will help them in the future.

Judy, I very happy that you were able to save your dog!  I have two very spoiled ones and know how attach you can get to them.  If you can't make it to the festival, maybe you can come to my house for a private lesson.  I teach at my home.  I live a little over 6 miles south of Chandler, TX by Lake Palestine.  Chandler is about 16-18 miles west of Tyler, TX.  I'm very reasonable about the pricing of my classes.   If you can't afford to make the trip the festival now, maybe this would be an alternative.  Give "your baby" a hug for me!
