I love working with gourds, and I love to pyrograph on them. Do mostly Hawaiian themes, since this is where I live.

Hi Cindy,

I use a Minicraft jigsaw, Microlux jigsaw for thinner gourds and a regular jigsaw if the gourd is really thick.  I clean up the edges with a Exacto knife. Phyllis

I did the Hickam craft fair for years and also belonged to the Pacific Handcrafter's Guild & sold at the Thomas Square event.  Didn't know how much I'd miss being there but now closer to family & get to come back every year.  Next time we're there let's get together.  We usually spend some time at Bellows.

Aloha Cindy! I love your work.
I miss living in Hawaii SO much! We sold our house in Ahuimanu Hills, Kaneohe a few years back when my hubby took a job at the Pentagon. Now I have to be like all the other mainlanders and settle for once a year trips back "home". So many folks in this area of CA from the islands.

Aloha Cindy-

Mahalo!  I use a miniature jigsaw - the Gourd Saw, from the Caning Shop - for the cutouts.  It doesn't leave a smooth edge. though, requiring quite a bit of hand filing and sanding to finish the edges, so I'm thinking of upgrading.  Check my page in the next couple of days to see the most ambitious cutout piece I've done yet - it's bamboo again.  THe rest of the carving is done with a Dremel.

Your honu are the best I've ever seen!

Reading Connie's note I agree about theTungsten burrs and Carbide Burs; they are the way to go when cutting into the gourd skin.  Diamond burrs are for after the outer skin is off, as they will clog up with resin.

It's a pleasure to accept your friendship invitation Cyndy!  I've seen your gourds and you-are-on-your-way girl!
