"I live in New Mexico. Today the wind will gust to 60mph. Spring is nothing but wind. I've done Thunder gourds but I want to make some gourd organs. Thanks so much for this info. Paula"

"Yes, Paula, it is a self-directing gourd organ.  Sounds kind of like an owl.  This was done as part of a class I taught at the Upper Midwest Kitemakers Retreat. There are others gourd organs and gourd wind instruments on my website at…"

"Christopher, I've been doing gourds for about 2years so there is a lot I don't know.  One of the things I don't know is what is going on here.  Could you explain this to me.  I assume it makes noise."

"Brenda, the wind cuts through the sound hole, creating a sound similar to blowing across the top of a bottle. (Though what note it plays depends on the gourd, size of hole, and wind speed.)  The vane keeps the sound hole perpendicular to the…"

"They play a note as the wind passes through a soundhole in the side or bottom of the gourd.  Different gourds and different size holes will play different notes.  Other gourd organs are…"

I am mostly interested in making aeolian gourd organs, but of course not every gourd is suitable for organs, so I end up using them for other things.

Welcome to Gourd Art Enthusiasts. I have been a member for almost a year and have found it to be a well managed site. Those in charge seem to do a great job.  The photos are so inspiring and the communication is great.  I do mostly woodburning but enjoy carving and plan to explore other media.  My wife and I are retired school teachers and are happy to have time to pursue our crafts.  Once again welcome.
