A Little Bit of Arizona

This is my first attempt at using cactus fiber harvested from my daughters yard in Scottsdale. Faux leather tooling seemed a natural for this gourd. I stained the cactus fiber with coffee.

Thank you for your nice comments Betty. I'm sorry your comments didn't show. I love good comments. It is quite a compliment coming from you. I love the detail & craftsmanship you show on your gourds. The quails are one of my favorities, and the baskets, & the weaving, etc. Oh, heck, I love them all!!!!!

Hi Betty, yes the faux. Turquoise is acrylic paints. The key is the Woodburn lines which can be achieved by using a dremel-type tool, a narrow inlay groove and applying thinned Black Gesso, or flat black paint inside the raw groove. Lines should come together like a 'stone puzzle', each piece has it's place.

The best advice I have for the Turq. paint is; find a chunk of real, unpolished turq. and study all the color variations and cracks and flaws found in one rock. Choose paint accordingly. As you apply paint to each piece work light to dark or visa-versa and remember you are building layers. One color at a time keeping away from the grooved edge. Apply Triple Thick Glaze (bottle) with a toothpick, in drops to get the lumpy surface & magnifying effect. Do not disturb until Dry.

Thanks Betty! The pieces incorporating wrought iron were a new direction for me and I love the combination of materials. Looking forward to doing more!

I love your work as well - especially those finishes that look like splatter marks. Organic and beautiful!

Thanks Betty! I love your stuff and your purse looks awesome! I didn't have the patience figure out how to line mine like yours. Is it difficult? I modge podged polar fleece pouches that I sewed together.  I'll work on getting those pics up. Can I ask?....How do you get the burl effect on the gourds?
