My first realistic gourd fish, made of a banana gourd. I used epoxy clay for the individually applied scales and acrylic film for the semi-transparent fins.~8" long

My grandmother has grown and sculpted with gourds for years - her passion has carried on to me! I make realistic animals with all sorts of gourds. I enjoy finding the animal within the gourd shape and making them look like they're ready to come alive.

Gourdies eeeeverywhere

I love to make animals/fantasy creatures from gourds! Turtles, frogs, mice, dragons, spiders, cats, birds, and tons of other ideas I haven't tried yet!

Many different creations A great sampler of my gourd art!

Gourd Turtles! I've made a series of gourd turtles to make specific species. I use maranka (aka, caveman) gourds. 59 differnet turtles so far!

Cara, thanks for such a detailed response.  That is very helpful for when I try adding clay to gourds.  Other than gourds, I am also a potter so am familiar with earth clay that has to be fired, but not these others.  Always something new to learn!

Cara thanks for this great information.  I have not tried paperclay or Apoxie Scupt I have used quik-wood and love it, but it dries to fast.  Again I love your work. You are so very talented.

Cara, I just found your site with all these amazing sculptures.  You are so talened.  I don't know which on I like better, but the baby elephant is on the top.  Do you make your own paperclay or purchase it?  If you make it could you share your recipe.  Again I really enjoy seeing your art work.  Thanks for sharing them with us.

Cara,  Your gourds are amazing.  When I saw the Elephant, I thought the zoo must have asked you to do that.  I have so much to learn & this site is exciting to look at & share ideas.  I read some of your admirers comments.  So, so talented you are & so many other artists on GAE.  Where do you find apoxie sculpt?  Your neighbor in Asheboro & Gourd Lover!  Janet

I do love your work and the Elephants leave me speechless. I have to comment on your Elephant Belly Rubbing Tabby, which looks just like two cats' I have had the pleasure of spending years with.
